THE SHED – 8TH FLOOR, EV BUILDING, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY, MONTREAL
JANUARY 23RD to FEBRUARY 3RD
We have been given possession of one “Homestyles Premier Vinyl Shed” measuring ten feet by eight feet for a period of two-weeks. It has been placed arbitrarily on the eighth floor of Concordia University’s EV building. A shed is designed to be generic and multipurpose. The owner’s needs, location and culture all influence what it will be used for. Within this shed space we have decided to imagine the possibilities of what a shed might be used for. We have filled it with objects one might find in a typical middle class Canadian shed. These objects vary from old sports and camping equipment to archaic computer accessories. Throughout the two-week time period we will be employing two strategies to re-contextualize the shed. We will reassemble the objects in various configurations and we will install a sheet that divides the space in different formations. Some objects will be painted to neutralize them and make them appear to recede into the background. The different configurations of these objects will change their value. For example, a blanket could be kept clean and in a safe space to be used for warmth or it could be crumpled in a pile and used by a child to construct a mountain in a miniature landscape. The space inside the shed will also be altered with the use of a sheet. It will be suspended in various ways that affect the viewer’s ability to move through the shed. The space will communicate different narratives depending on the way we edit its contents. These imaginings of hypothetical shed spaces demonstrate how context can transform meaning.

SHED HAPPENS
Shed begins to happen…
Make an appointment, fill out some paperwork, rent out your Facebook wall for a few minutes or a day in exchange for KITTIES! Sign on the dotted line…
Shed keeps on happening…
Letters to strangers are written in the backyard and left on the clothesline…
More unsigned paperwork…
More trouble behind the shed… Where’s the manager?
NOTE: There was a staged party in the shed, that was recorded and later played-back at the opening. All the bottles of alcohol bottles were also staged (and empty) as we did not have a permit to serve food and drinks. One student performed locked inside the shed, sitting still and wearing a mask for 3 hours during the actual opening. Waitresses served inedible food while various other projects and installations took place.
